Trading a pre-off steamer

See more:

These are the main steps and conditions in this example:

1. Find a horse race with 13 or less runners.

2. At 5 minutes before the race take a horse priced below 4.5.

3. At 1 minute before the off check whether the back price of that selection has dropped. If there is more than one qualifying horse, take the one with the biggest price drop.

4. Back on that horse.

5. When the market turns In-Play, place a greening-up lay bet on that horse aiming to win at least 10% profit. This bet should be placed no matter what the current price is, after it's been 30 sec since the start of the race. If the bet stays unmatched, leave it there to be matched eventually.

Right-click here to download the trigger file.

There are two triggers in the file. The first file backs on the horse that satisfies the given conditions. The second trigger places a lay bet to green-up to the specified profit percentage. To change that percentage simply key in a different number in the "Profit %" field.

Below is an illustration of the triggers' work.

The lay bet was placed 30 sec after the start, and now it's gong to be matched:

Would it be easy to reverse this trigger so that it placed a Lay bet before the off and then greened-up using a Back bet? The reason I ask is that the majority of 'Steamers' go on to lose (Google 'steamers and drifters' and check the second link to BetFair's forum)

I agree with MiniBlueDragon as I have had my fingers burnt trying to trade in play with a back bet first. The logic sounds good but you suffer a large loss if the horse falls early on or simply gets off to a horrible start.

Both of you may be right of course, I just found this one on the web and did not make any changes to it.
You can modify the triggers in any way that you think reasonable.

The other argument here is also that the majority of runners in a race will drift to begin with so you're far more likely to catch a winning bet.

Conversely if you Lay and then Back and MFP/BetFair/Your internet go down you're left with a large liability. :(

Feeder, as per my initial comment, how easy would it be to reverse this trigger to Lay and then Back?
